Very sad update regarding Febe – 20 March 2024
It is with very great sadness we announce that Febe lost her fight for life and has passed over the rainbow bridge to hopefully a happy pain free loving existence. We thank the amazing efforts and care of Oasi Crotone ONLUS with the wonderful Rosamaria Cozza and her volunteers who nursed her. At least she did not die alone. She was shown the care, love and kindness since rescue she should have experienced from birth. When someone asks you why rescue and donating is so important, point them to Febe’s story here.
Please continue to donate in memory of Febe. 100% of all donations go toward our fight for justice, health and forever homes for all the “Febe’s” wherever they may be!
Febe update 9 March 2024 by Chiara
Our little warrior Febe continues to fight and is improving every day. The vet told Chiara yesterday that Febe has leishmaniasis and multiple tick-borne illnesses. Her treatment has started and she seems more healthy and happy, but she still faces many problems and is not ‘out of the woods’.
Febe was found by chance on Sunday 18 February in Calabria by Chiara. Although she had rescued dogs for many years, Febe’s condition was unlike anything she had ever seen. Her legs were collapsing, every step was unsteady, her body was just a “bag of bones”, all ribs and skin stretched over the frame. She was so tiny, and was obviously only kept going by her instinctive will to survive. I often think with great sadness how unwell, lonely and fearful she must have felt throughout her ordeal whilst the world around her, people were just watching carelessly.
Rosamaria Cozza, her volunteers and rescuers are loving and caring for Febe at Oasi Rifugio Crotone ONLUS.

Febe is not a Setter but she unexpectedly came into my life and having read her story I hope you will understand my wish to share it with you.
This is the story of a poor poor dog who for months roamed the streets and lanes around a village in Calabria, neglected as her health continued to decline. We were there for a week and we didn’t see her until the very hour of our departure. We were all ready to leave and on our way out of the gate we saw her. I have been rescuing dogs for many years, and thought I had seen everything but I had never seen anything so sad like this before. We looked at her with total shock, it felt unreal for a few seconds. Her legs were collapsing from time to time, every step was unsteady. Her body was just a “bag of bones”, all ribs and skin stretched over the frame of her body. We rushed to reach her. Despite being desperately unwell she picked up speed frightened by our presence. She bit my husband as he tried to retrieve her, but we didn’t give up. We managed to wrap her in a towel which calmed her down. She was so tiny, kept going only by her instinctive will to survive. My husband carried her in his arms wrapped in the towel, to a safe place in our house, where we gave her water and something to eat and arranged for her to be picked up.
A few hours later she was in the care of Oasi Crotone ONLUS with the wonderful Rosamaria Cozza and her volunteers who are nursing her back to health. I don’t even want to think what the destiny of many dogs would be if these rescuers were not operating in this part of the world.
This little creature’s name is Febe (Phoebe). She has been in their care since Sunday, February 18. Her condition is still critical, but she has made great progress. Her survival remains uncertain. The vets acted as quickly as they could, but for now all we can do is wait and hope.
Febe (Phoebe) deserves a chance to live a better life. She is struggling every day and with every breath she takes. You can help her fight by donating to her ‘fighting fund’. I hope your heart is touched enough to support her cause.
